this painting was inspired by my exploration of empress energy, a theme that influenced its creation. i envisioned it as a period piece, a deliberate change from my usual nude work, to challenge myself artistically. painting clothing felt unfamiliar and a bit daunting. but it pushed me to grow. for the background, i allowed myself to loosen up and embrace spontaneity. it was a freeing yet challenging process.
i included my sister and i's beloved cat, herman, nestled in the bottom right corner as the empress's familiar, adding a layer of enchantment and intimacy. her braids become a home for hummingbirds, their nest symbolizing the harmonious connection between feminine energy and the natural world. a vintage cameo brooch adorns her chest, fastened directly into the canvas, adding a timeless charm. the word "mignonne," meaning "cute" in French, further weaves a sense of subtle whimsy into the piece.
